A little bit about who we are and how we got here.
We are Pamela and Larry Nelson, and we purchased this farm in July of '07.
Why? Well, that has lots of answers, but probably what got us off our
butts to finally go out and find something was the fact that Pam had
gotten her first horse, Paris, and she was boarding her at a local boarding
facility just a few minutes from our Urbana house, which was fine in its
way. Relatively convenient, nice folks, lots of other horses to see and
interact with, big indoor riding arena, etc., etc. Still, it's just not
quite the same as being able to walk out of your home at any time to go
see your horse. And with Pam now having her sights on another horse,
Sonny, a horse that Pam promised to both Sonny and the Universe,
"If we ever get a place in the country of our own, I'm going to get Sonny!",
well, it appeared to be the time to start looking in earnest.
Let's back up just a wee bit...
I suppose we both had fantasized about having a place in the country for years,
occasionally making inquires and scanning thru rural real estate ads, but
nothing ever really popped out at us. It just wasn't the right time.
We even thought maybe just find some land, say around 10 acres or so, then
eventually build a dream house, or, more likely, with land prices in Champaign
County being what they are, maybe just plop a trailer down on it.
So now it's Spring of 2007 and we find that, omigosh, we are COMPLETELY out
of debt! The house is paid off, both vehicles are paid off, and the Lance
slide-in truck camper Larry bought with his '05 retirement money is paid off!
All we have are the monthly utilities and the credit cards, which get paid
off in full every month anyway. Larry had been hired back at the University
(after the 60 days off requirement had passed after retiring) into the same
job, same office, nearly the same salary, so with the retirement income plus
rehired salary, the ol' casheroonies were beginning to accumulate. We ran
some numbers and figured what we could probably afford, assuming we might
possibly keep the Urbana house and rent it out as additional income. Now
we started looking for something out there a little more seriously.
(more when I get time...)
